Blood pressure

Blood pressure

Konstantin Buteyko had high blood pressure himself. He developed the method looking for an answer to his own problem.

Familiar signs

Unstable readings
Heaviness or headaches
Flushing and heat
Sharp spikes under stress

Why does this happen?

Lying in hospital, Buteyko noticed that dying patients were all breathing hard and deep. When he restricted his own breathing, his blood pressure fell.

Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide both dilate blood vessels. Over-breathing loses carbon dioxide, and vessels constrict.

This does not replace medical treatment. But correcting a breathing pattern is a harmless step to take alongside it.

What changes?

  • A softer stress response
  • Easier access to the recovery state
  • Better sleep, which steadies daytime readings

Which exercises?

1

Rhythmic breathing

Six breaths a minute, ten minutes, two or three times a day.

2

Extended exhale

Keep the out-breath longer than the in-breath — four in, six to eight out.

Other topics

This is educational information, not medical advice, and it does not replace treatment.

A good life starts with breathing well.
