Foundations of breathing

Who Buteyko was and what he discovered. How the nose, diaphragm and tongue work together. The first core exercises.

Lesson recording

This is a demo build. The real lesson recording will sit here.

What this lesson covers

Buteyko's story

Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko had high blood pressure himself. Lying in hospital expecting to die, he noticed that the dying patients around him were all breathing hard and deep. When he restricted his own breathing, his pressure fell. That observation began thirty years of research.

Twenty thousand breaths a day

We breathe between twenty and thirty thousand times a day. It is the most repeated action in your life. Correct the thing you do most, and you get the largest change.

What the nose does

Nasal breathing produces nitric oxide in the sinuses. The nose warms, humidifies and filters the air. Breathing through the mouth loses all of it.

The diaphragm

Carl Stough, an American researcher, rehabilitated patients with chronic lung disease using diaphragm work alone. A properly working diaphragm massages the internal organs and releases neck and shoulder tension.

Tongue posture

The whole tongue should rest against the palate, not just the tip. Tongue position directly affects the shape of the face, the jaw and the position of the neck. A tongue that falls backwards produces snoring.

Exercises

Rhythmic breathing

Five seconds in, five out. Six breaths a minute, with no pause between them.

Alternate nostril breathing

Close one nostril and breathe slowly for two and a half minutes, then switch.

Diaphragm work

Hands on the ribs, push against them and feel a 360° expansion. Shoulders stay still.

Tongue suction

Press the whole tongue to the palate and hold for one minute, until it tires.

Homework

  • 1Observe your breathing for twenty-four hours and notice when you hold it
  • 2Do the nine-minute rhythmic breathing exercise three times a day
  • 3Remind yourself to keep the tongue on the palate through the day

Terms

Diaphragm
The primary breathing muscle, sitting below the lungs.
Nitric oxide
A vessel-dilating gas produced in the nasal sinuses.
Air hunger
The urge to breathe felt during the exercises.
